Celebrating Buddha’s Enlightenment

Nyungne retreat

We celebrate this very special day – Buddha’s enlightenment day on April 15 – with a unique and most beautiful 2-day retreat. You are welcome to join us for one or both days.

This two day fasting and purification practice is done in conjunction with beautiful prayers to 1,000 Armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of compassion. It is the traditional way to celebrate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day, called Nyungne in Tibetan.

On the first day we abstain from all meals apart from lunch at 12.30 pm.

On the second day traditionally we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours.

Please read before registering/attending

You must take Mahayana precepts at 6:30am each day that you participate.

If you have received these before you can do them at home on your own. Otherwise you must attend the 6:30am Precepts session on Zoom.

The first day we eat a simple precepts meal at 12:30pm.

Traditionally on the second day of the retreat we abstain from all food and also water! (This is optional and not recommended if you have many activities to do besides engaging in the retreat).

If you haven’t taken precepts before, it is good to know that in general we try to minimize our non-spiritual activities on such days and in particular wear no scented products, eat just one simple meal at midday (with no meat, eggs, garlic, onions or spices), abstain from singing, dancing, and wearing jewellery.

Generally we refrain from following delusions throughout the day as best we can, thus keeping as pure a mind as possible for the whole day.
