Overcoming Obstacles to Your Happiness: Meditations on the Heart Sutra

Although we all wish to be happy, again and again we find our attainment of happiness frustrated by obstacles or hindrances, both internal and external. Internal hindrances, such as negative thoughts and delusions, worry, attachment and anger, cause us mental harm and suffering and directly interfere with our happiness. External hindrances include natural disasters, dangerous situations, and also the endless demands of modern life which prevent us from devoting time to our spiritual path. The result is that we find it very difficult to fulfill our basic wishes for happiness and freedom in our everyday life.

In this retreat, we’ll learn the sacred practice of reciting and contemplating the words of the Essence of Wisdom Sutra, or Heart Sutra, which can be performed as a special method for averting hindrances and obstacles, either for one’s own sake or for the benefit of others. We’ll also have the opportunity to engage in meditations to gain an experience of the wisdom realizing emptiness, and what it feels like to mix our mind with emptiness, the meaning of which is revealed in the profound words of the Heart Sutra.
